About

Alysa Campos is a painter and designer based in Houston, Texas, where she lives with her husband and son. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design. She is drawn to the fluidity between watercolor and watered-down acrylic paints and enjoys playing with bold colors.

Her paintings take inspiration from nature, spiritual beliefs, and memories. Since becoming a mother, the fleeting moments of daily life have become a central thread in her work.

Artist Statement

I paint to hold on to a moment I know is ending. It can be a moment alone or one shared with loved ones. I find myself being pulled out of the present to grieve its passing, knowing it's already becoming a memory.

Becoming a first-time mother has sharpened this for me. So many of the fleeting moments I find myself trying to hold onto now are small, ordinary ones with my son, the moments we spend in play or seeing him experience the world for the first time. Motherhood has a way of amplifying the way time feels both endless and short all at once.

I find most of my inspiration in nature, color, and in light. Color, to me, represents feeling and comes before the rest of the composition. Light and fragments of light point toward the soul and the presence of the spiritual entities. Nature feels like a bridge between both and what tethers me to the world in front of me and, to whatever I understand faith to be.

Faith runs through my work less as a statement and more as an ongoing question. I'm interested in noticing it, and pausing and listening to what I feel is being spoken to me. Painting becomes a way of paying attention to that landscape: recognizing patterns, returning to certain shapes and figures, and feeling connected to something greater than myself.

I feel my work is a tool to process and absorb moments that feel fleeting long enough to see what all they hold. I hope it invites you to slow down and notice your own fleeting moments, too.
